One of her kind in the tribe...

Manya had been pouring over a book quite seriously for quite some time, and then in a loud aha moment she goes, “My god, this book is incredible. It has great quotes - I need to note some of these down.”
Ofcourse this got my curiosity piqued. And I was shocked at what she was reading. She had got something from her daddy’s shelf. Just check out the notes she has made.
For all the beautiful books we have shared with her, she has never found any single one so noteworthy apparently! 🙄
Very cheekily she goes, “this has good stuff - how to say no and all”. (Reminder i sent her way - it’s not to be applied to parents)
Just in case you wonder if she gave up on it - she did eventually, when she reached the page that said, “Sometimes you need to allow life to save you from getting what you want.”
She goes, “I think after all this is a book for grown ups.”
And I was like, “oh no, after all it is age appropriate for you”. 😛
Manya: 01
Mommy: 01
And that’s how we commence our winter break.

Blind(folded) love...

We were lying down in bed after a long cross country flight and Manya was being all fidgety and sleepless - Vish and I both were getting irritated with her moving constantly and then she finally takes out her eye mask and puts it on Vish. We both are like WTH. What is this for? She goes, "It is for love. Because true love is in a blindfold.".

We were literally rofl - obviously she had heard true love is blind somewhere but clearly didn't understand much of it!

First Public Performance!

Somebody has taken to a new hobby - playing the piano! M started taking classes this ummer and has showed growing interest - she practices almost everyday - not very long bust enough to keep up with her teacher's expectations. I think she is doing great.

Had her first ever concert - was slightly nervous but pulled it off with flying colors!

#NewEraDawns #AgeofWisdom #MagicvsTruth

(Warning: This is going to be a long read.)
We started the Santa’s presents, elf on the shelf, Easter bunny etc after Manya turned 2., and very recently the tooth fairy did bring in some cash.
Ever since she turned three or so, she has been questioning the practicalities involved - how come you don’t know when Santa comes, so if any stranger came into you wouldn’t know? How can the Easter bunny carry a basket? How can the toy elf move on it’s own? In the last few years she’d come back from school and say so and so says it’s not real etc etc. And then she’d ask us - “do you believe in all this?” And I’d ask her “what do you think?” She would always say, after voicing all her objections, “but I do believe in magic so yes I do believe.” And I’d say that’s all that matters then.
Last night, this newly minted 7 year old very seriously sits me down and says - is Santa real? I again went back to my “what do you think”. And she goes, “I want to believe it’s all real but I think it’s not. It doesn’t really make sense all the time. Tell me the truth.”
And I told her she was right. I also added that parents go through all this just to keep childhood a little magical and fun and not to really deceive their kids or lie to them. And she smiled and said “I understand. Thank you for doing all of that - all the presents and the letters. And Thank you also for telling me the truth.”
Manya stumps me with her maturity at times ... I was surprised that she didn’t seem very upset. So I asked her. And she goes “no I am not upset. I am just a little disappointed that there is no real magic in this world. But I like truth too.”
Oh my god, we hugged and we hugged. And I told her I don’t know about real magic but there are truly magical things that happen - like she happened to us, like the beauty of nature, like the joy of sharing and kindness.
As we were getting a little too sappy, she winked and said no need to write to Santa and worrying about him getting my letter.
And so we sat down and decided on new traditions - instead of letters to Santa, we’ll all write notes about our favorite moments and seal the envelopes under the tree, and read it out in Christmas morning. No gifts from Santa but we will still wrap gifts for each other and put it under the tree as surprises.
So there won’t be Santa, no elf or tooth fairy, but the spirit of celebration and joy and sharing they stand for will remain.
P.S. I did tell her she doesn’t have to announce the truth to everyone as let the parents decide when the kids are ready. And she goes sure, I’ll also tell my daughters when they turn 7 - not before that. (PSS She wants to have two wonderful daughters “just like her” ... 🤣🤣🤣 but I digress, 7 is the age of wisdom, guys, so you know. )

Milestone update - 7

I don't know how many times a parent must say and wonder how time flies. Well it does, and it seems to get ahead of itself, if that was possible.

So what is our little 7 year old upto...

- Social, pragmatic, diplomatic - M is a joy to have. She is feisty, rebellious, and extremely sassy too especially at home - she is no goody two shoes all the time - but she is genuinely warm and kind. So go figure who she is - she is a hurricane with the right intentions mostly - haa!

- She started a new hobby this year - piano! She judiciously practices and seems to be enjoying it for the last couple of months and let's see where this musical journey takes her.

- Lost her two baby teeth! and gained a couple of inches - she does stand tall and threaten my position as number 2 tallest in our family of 3. ;)

- I think we have a reader here and quite a decent writer too (when she feels inspired enough that is). Horror as a genre fascinates her to no end.

- I feel the princess phase is kind of mellowing down and we might be on the pharaoh stage now - she wants to rule! But on a serious note - i think her mind is wandering beyond glitter and pink - literally and figuratively. She loves all her girlie accessories still but is embracing mustards and auburns and denims again, which is a welcome relief.

- She loves being out and about and busy - we have activities 2 days a week, another day she stays back at school for after school clubs (currently - Robotics), 2 other days she has recurring play dates most weeks - and she still thinks has has time for gymnastics, spanish, and what not. I had heard of overscheduling parents - ever heard of overscheduling kids?

- BabyCenter sent me an email this mornign congratulating me that I have now entered the most rewarding phase as a parent - well I am not celebrating yet - Agreed Manya is a great companion for most things - travel, car rides, conversations, activities, etc etc - but does she has an opinion or what. And she is defiant. My ears seldom hear, "Yes mom" at the first go. So many times anything that i say is replied by something that begins with But or However or No or How about. The sass, and sarcasm, and attitude all combined with this beautiful heart and intelligence is a deadly combination!

You are 7!

And you are on a roll!

Oh my god, Manya - you are 7. You are such a big girl now. I am thoroughly enjoying all our grown up conversations these days - errm - well mostly - I still shout back because I said so quite a few times don't I - when I know you want to know the inside and out of every why that could be possible. Well patience has not been my virtue and not really the greatest of your strengths either...;)

You know I have begun to imagine you reading these letters when you are all grown up and imagining your reactions to them. I hope I get to see you reading these at different points in your life. And I hope that each time you read them you recall the tender and the furious moments we have shared with love in your heart and joy in your soul. You are so loved - We are proud to have such an intelligent, caring, kind, (and sassy) but mostly very adorable daughter like you.

You wanted a rainbow themed birthday this year - and I think that is totally befitting! May you shine bright with all your colors, always.

I recently read this poem by Neil Gaiman and boy, could I have put in words better all the prayers and wishes that we have for you. So this one is for you my love. Happy 7th. Happy Every Day.

BLUEBERRY GIRL

by Neil Gaiman
Ladies of Light & Ladies of Darkness,
& Ladies of Never-You-Mind,
this is a prayer for a Blueberry Girl.
First, May you ladies be kind.

Keep her from spindles and sleeps at sixteen;
Let her stay waking and wise.
Nightmares at three, or bad husbands at thirty;
These will not trouble her eyes.

Dull days at forty, false friends at fifteen;
Let her have brave days and truth.
Let her go places that we’ve never been;
Trust and delight in her youth.

Ladies of Grace, and Ladies of Favour,
and Ladies of Merciful Night,
this is a prayer for a Blueberry Girl,
Grant her your clearness of sight.

Words can be worrisome, people complex;
Motives and manners unclear.
Grant her the wisdom to choose her path right,
Free from unkindness and fear.

Let her tell stories, and dance in the rain,
Somersault, tumble, and run;
Her joys must be high as her sorrows are deep,
Let her grow like a weed in the sun.

Ladies of Paradox, Ladies of Measure,
Ladies of Shadows-That-Fall;
this is a prayer for a Blueberry Girl,
Words written clear on a wall.

Help her to help herself, help her to stand,
Help her to lose, and to find.
Teach her we’re only as big as our dreams,
show her that fortune is blind.

Truth is a thing she must find for herself,
precious, and rare as a pearl;
Give her all these, and a little bit more,
Gifts for a Blueberry Girl.

Cheerleading: No, thank you!

For the second year in a row, M (who is in Grade 1 now) came home with a flyer for a mini cheer leading clinic being hosted by the school district.

As a parent, life is tough. It becomes even more difficult when you are bringing up your kid in a geographically, and more importantly, culturally very different place. Add to that the changing times, generation gap, lack of adequate familiar structures to lean on, and sometimes you feel you'd be better be off marooned on an island.

But I digress...

So last year the final game timings were all late night and we gave that excuse to distract her from the flyer. This time, I took the bull by the horn. I sat her down and had a conversation I'd much rather have with an older kid but what do they say about desperate times and desperate measures..

This is exactly what I told her.

"You are such a wonderful and delightful child - whatever you choose to do and put your heart and soul into, you are more than likely to succeed and excel. As an individual you have full right to choose your likes, your activities, your passions. However, also because you are only 6, I feel, as your parents it is our responsibility to steer you away from what we feel is inherently not right. I'll try to say what I want to in as simple a way I can but you might not understand all of it or appreciate it and it is okay. We can discuss all we want  - don't feel pressurized into agreeing till you are somewhat convinced.

I as a person, and more so as a girl, do not approve of cheerleading in the form it is presented today. For starters, I don't understand why instead of a boys' sports team and a girls' cheerleading team, we can't have a girls' sports team as well. Two, why are their mostly only girl cheerleaders.I don't see boys cheerleading for girl' teams. For all the effort and time that goes into cheerleading, why can't more professional sports (including gymnastics) and dancing talents be pursued?"

We don't give enough credit to children's maturity. I was expecting M to quip with a "Mom but I love to dance and have fun - and I want to wear all those glamorous dresses and makeup." But she didn't. She patiently heard me out, gave it adequate thought and you know what she said? She said, "Mom, I think you are right - I mean if I want to dance I am sure you will let me. If I want to go cheer my school team or friends' team at the stadium, I am sure you will let me - why is cheerleading even there?"

I wanted to tell her it comes from a society that thinks oversexualization of women in the name of entertainment purposes is completely acceptable and even desirable. It comes from a society where women are still considered the weaker sex - expected to succeed in "supporting roles" - expected to cheer as the men go to war and games. It comes from a society where even after a much publicized #MeToo movement, locker room conversations and jock culture continue to be cool. It comes from a society where "having some fun" means bullying girls for their body types, objectifying them, and instilling inferiority complexes in young impressionable minds. It comes from a society that campaigns for more women in senior management and STEM, and advocates girls soccer and MMA teams, while handing them flyers for cheerleading clinics and not to their classmates with the penis.

But, you see, there's only so much a 6 year old can take. So I just told her that sometimes our institutions work in funny ways that do not do anything to empower us. And that is why we have to constantly question what we are doing and why.

Ofcourse every few days she comes back saying so and so is into cheerleading or so and so's sister is into cheerleadng and they enjoy it - and I simply smile and say good for them but you can use your time for something else - something more meaningful for you and me? And remember you dance your heart out - i'll buy you pom poms if I must. And I promise to drop you to the stadium for teams you want to cheer for. Will that work? And she smiles back and says yes. and I say a silent thank you to someone up above listening.

P.S. I am hearing a lot in defense of cheerleading. And I'll be glad to get your perspective on it too. I try to be open minded. But here's some more food for thought.
For those who argue that there are men cheer leaders too. Well, I do know that but that percentage is too low to take into account. I also know that cheerleading started off as a men's only activity. But unless you are telling me men wear revealing clothes and jiggle their privates with millions of spectators with the supposed aim to cheer for a team that is not even watching, don't bother.

The cheerleading is also a sport argument - Well, I understand cheer leading requires rigorous practice and is very demanding physically and there are some contests too - it is not a true sport. Unless you have heard of world number one cheer leader or Olympics cheerleading teams, again, don't bother. Put all that effort and compete in gymnastics baby - where you will be known for your individual sport and not as supporting spectacle. Not to mention you don't want to be in a "sport" where you are not only underpaid but have to accept sexual harassment and groping as "perks" of the job! Read this.

Oh but what's the harm! Everybody does it for fun! Well, I don't know - some people kill for fun. Many years go there was no perceived harm in child marriages, bride burning, witch hunting. As  a parent it is my duty to encourage my daughter to get the best of what this world has to offer and give her best - and surely there's more out there? No?

Why be a princess when you can be the pharaoh!

We are taking a break from Disney (thank god for small mercies), and are currently fascinated by all things ancient Egyptian - including pyramids, mummies, and ofcourse the enigmatic Cleopatra.

#MorningCardiacArrest

Me: Manya what are you pouring over this seriously first thing in the morning.
M: Mom, I finally figured out the f word that is really bad so now I am checking out the exact meaning in my dictionary.
Me (😱😳🤭🤨😖😫), composing myself: Oh really, what is it?
M: You tell me, I’ll tell you if I got it right or not.
Me (not falling for this): How about we take turns to spell it. I’ll go first - F
M: Okay, R
Me (kind of calmed down but now in a fix): I?
M: Freak has an i or an e after r?
Me: E E E - come I’ll help you find the word - let’s learn how to use the dictionary. And remember Freak is very rude - you will not use it. Okay?
M: okay, now let me look for some more bad words.
Me: 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

#UncoolMom

M wearing her scary mask and holding a broom: Mom I am all ready to *horrorize* you.
Me: Horrify me? Scare me? Terrorize me? Horrorize is not a word.
M: I don’t care if horrorize is a word or not but you are definitely not cool.
Me: 🤷🏻‍♀️ what kind of logical deduction is that.
And then she did the eye roll!!! She actually rolled her eyes and left the scene!!!! 🙄

#CurrentTrackOnRepeat

This is our first grader’s soundtrack on loop. It doesn’t matter where - driving, bedtime, homework, bath room - she’s always singing it or listening to it. The other day at a birthday party, a couple of kids broke into the song impromptu - at the cake cutting!
Just to give you an idea of how annoying it can be - imagine this a gazillion times ....
Yeah, I'm gonna take my horse to the old town road
I'm gonna ride 'til I can't no more
I'm gonna take my horse to the old town road
I'm gonna ride 'til I can't no more
And then she goes on and on and gets on my nerves, especially with this stanza...
Can't nobody tell me nothin'
You can't tell me nothin'
Can't nobody tell me nothin'
You can't tell me nothin'
And as to the increasing inappropriateness of the lyrics especially towards the end ...
🤭🤫🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

"Ex"cavating the past...

Manya, out of nowhere: Mom, do you have any ex-boyfriends?
Me, pretending innocence: What is an ex-boyfriend?
Manya, very seriously: You know if you liked someone and they liked you but you couldn’t marry them because daddy came in the way.
Me: 🤭

Mistress of Fright

Manya has always loved everything Halloween and enjoys scary stories. She now is thoroughly taken by the Goosebumps series. Has also entered the next phase of writing and imagining her own scary stories - they are very spooky, and mostly every one dies in the end! Oops!

#BedtimeMusings

In all earnestness, M goes, “Mommy have you noticed to become great or famous either your parents must be poor or dead. With normal parents not much greatness is possible.
Like you know so many scientists in this book (our bedtime read currently is Women in Science: 50 Pioneers who changed the world) or like even characters in books - like Harry Potter”
It took me a couple of minutes to stop laughing and formulate an answer around how many a times extreme circumstances/ experiences inspire you or give you the much needed drive to excel as against having everything already available to you. I don’t think she got much of what I was trying to say and she was sleepy too. Another day perhaps.

History Lessons!

Manya: Mom, let’s play pretend n play.
Me (with complete disinterest): Okay, what are we playing?
Manya: Just lie down on the bed peacefully, close you eyes and relax.
Me (with renewed enthusiasm): Oh sure. Then?
Manya: So you are Pearl Harbor and I am Japan.
Before I am able to process this information, she comes and crashes onto me with full force! And that hurt!
Me: What the hell Manya! What was that! It hurt. Why are you so violent! Why did you hit me so hard!
Manya: Because you wont buy and sell stuff from me.
Me (raging mad by this point): What the...!
Manya: Yep, that’s why Japan attacked Pearl Harbor.
Me (absolutely furious): I don’t care. You talk to me first and no hitting - not even in play.
Manya (very cheekily): It was a surprise attack Mom. Everybody was shocked - nobody was prepared.
(PS: She is reading a book on Pearl Harbor and is thoroughly fascinated)
Me: You wait. Ill show you how US retaliated. I am sure your book doesn’t talk about that.
Manya (sensing danger): But mom this Japan and Pearl Harbor will now talk and sort issues - lets kiss and makeup.
Me (slightly melted): Yes and lets not play war. War is not a game - it’s sad and destructive. War does no good and we should learn from the past and not repeat those mistakes.
Manya: Okay mom. Let’s play another game. You stop me from entering your shop because i am black - then i will protest, okay?
(PS: The other book she is reading is about the civil rights movement in the US.)
At this point, I am officially done with Spring Break.

Maneuvering thru Parenting Labels...

(Context: This article!)

It’s so difficult to meander thru the many labels parenting gets. Every once in a while I panic - am I being a helicopter parent? Am I a lawn mower? Am I letting my child fail enough? Am I giving her opportunities to learn enough and grow enough?
I agree with all these articles and people that talk about failure, and acceptance of it being such an important aspect of shaping young minds but in everyday moments it is tricky - when do I hold back, when do I let go, when do I save her sand castle, when do I build her a snowman, when do I let her fall, when do I carry her in my arms...

Eavesdropping at a Play Date!

Play date with three girls. Still overhearing as I write...
G1: i had such a horrible day at school today.
G2: mine was bad too.
G3: mine sucked too!
G2: there are these few boys who keep pushing everyone during recess. I hate most boys.
G3: i hate boys too.
G1: what are you saying! I love boys! I hate my teacher.
....
G1: Have you watched the descendants?
G2: no, my mom says it’s not age appropriate.
G1: but I am some months younger than you and I watch it all the time. Your mom is wrong.
G2: but she is older she can’t be wrong.
G1: everybody can be wrong.
G2: even if my mom is wrong she is never going to admit it.
....
G3: there’s this boy in my class with a very funny name, bucket.
G2: that’s a very funny name
G3: but he is so handsome i might just marry him.
G1: but did he give you a ring yet.
G3: that can happen only when we are grown up
G2: yeah there’s this guy in my class i really like and want to marry but i will wait till i am my mom’s age to marry. Oh and he doesn’t even have a funny name.
...
G1: can i be the boss now?
G2: no, the person who is hosting the playdate gets to be the boss
G3: why cant we all be bosses
G1: that makes no sense - you cant be a boss till you have someone to boss over.
....
G2: i have a crush on you.
G1: awwwww i have a crush on you too.
G3: you guys are so funny.
All: awww aren’t we just so adorable - we love each other.

I have a dream...

Sometime last week, Manya rushes to the door as I wait to pick her up from school - hurries to the car, plops herself onto her car seat, and I hadn’t even started the ignition that she exclaims, “Mom did you know had it not been for Martin Luther King Jr., you and I wouldn’t even get to ride the public transport in America. Thank god you came to America after everybody became equal.”
Her teacher tells me she has been all ears, absorbing everything around the subject and pouring over related books in the school library too. She wanted to warn me about the discussions that might ensue. And they sure did. What interesting (and uncomfortable) conversations have we been having!
M’s words:
“Doing good for people could get you shot.”
“Why did the whites think they were superior - how did the blacks not think that” “why did the white get to rule over”
“How did it all - saying we are not equal -start?”
“How can some people think it’s okay to treat others badly - everybody knows what is bad and good behavior - how can the government support such a thing”
“Color does not matter. Character does”
Explaining all this to a 6 year old is tough, let me tell you that! I have been dreading every “mom did you know” “mom why do you think” “mom I was wondering”, lately.
And ofcourse the most interesting aspect is that M is actually fascinated by MLK Jr’s wife more than him. She says Rosa Parks was so great and so brave, why do people not talk about her enough.
And so this pint sized researcher on race in America was found in the political biographies section in the library today, with an eager and thoroughly amused librarian, to help find books on Manya’s current hero - Rosa Parks!
(PS Manya also got to hear the famous “I have a dream” speech at school and again at home, and I don’t know how much she understands but every now and then she very sweetly repeats random mismatched lines from memory.)

Well done Sister Suffragette!

I introduced a childhood favourite to Manya this past weekend. We thoroughly enjoyed the original classic - Mary Poppins, especially the songs.
When i asked M what was her favourite, i was sure she would choose between the evergreen A spoonful of sugar or the fun number Chim chim cheree. She shocked me by declaring the Sister Suffragette has her absolute favourite. Its strange how i had never given the song much thought all these years ago and never in between. However, now thanks to Manya listening to it constantly for the past few days, we both have learnt the lyrics and enjoy “marching” to its tune!
The lyrics and the song for you to enjoy...
We're clearly soldiers in petticoats
And dauntless crusaders for woman's votes
Though we adore men individually
We agree that as a group they're rather stupid!
Cast off the shackles of yesterday!
Shoulder to shoulder into the fray!
Our daughters' daughters will adore us
And they'll sing in grateful chorus
"Well done, Sister Suffragette!"
From Kensington to Billingsgate
One hears the restless cries!
From ev'ry corner of the land:
"Womankind, arise!"
Political equality and equal rights with men!
Take heart! For Missus Pankhurst has been clapped in irons again!
No more the meek and mild subservients we!
We're fighting for our rights, militantly!
Never you fear!
So, cast off the shackles of yesterday!
Shoulder to shoulder into the fray!
Our daughters' daughters will adore us
And they'll sing in grateful chorus
"Well done! Well done!
Well done Sister Suffragette!"
